Kinja'd!!!

Like almost everyone here, I’m constantly flirting with the idea of a new car. Well yesterday work loaned me a top spec Fiesta Ecoboost 100hp for the day. I loved it other than the brakes being shot (4 years of abuse as a company vehicle will do that). But the engine was incredibly smooth for a 1l turbo and handling was great (although not as communicative as the Twingo).

This has made the 140hp ecoboost Zetec S very tempting to me. Before you all say “ just buy an ST” I cant afford the running costs on one. Insurance especially is sky high. Plus the 1l is a gem and I’d love to own a car with one. I’ve criticised them before for shittier fuel economy than promised, but the character makes up for that.

It probably costs you more to insure a Fiesta ST than it does for me to insure my M3.

I pay £500 a year with an £800 excess to insure my 60hp Twingo. I have three years of completely clean driving and have off street parking. Insurance here is a joke.

What does an excess mean?

What you have to pay if you need to make a claim. So basically if my car was stolen I’d have to pay £800 on top of the £500 I already pay them to get the £2k the car is worth. I’d only make £700 back to replace it essentially. Basically it’s a complete scam.

Ah, we call that a deductible.

I pay $300 a month for full coverage on both cars. It used to be about 150 a month, but then I put my M3 into my garage wall and made a claim.

That really is an utter scam. I am curious why it’s so bad in the UK though. Surely the free market should solve that issue? Or are UK drivers rather accident prone or are car thefts rather rampant?

I dont think it would even be possible for me to insure an M3 here. At my age (23) they’ll flat refuse to insure some stuff, or the price will be a total joke.

I have no idea, it’s widely known the industry as a whole is corrupt. I think because it’s a legal requirement they collude to jack up prices. It’s only getting worse for young drivers. My younger brother is learning to drive now that he’s 17. To even insure a little micra could cost him well over a thousand pounds and he’d need a black box installed.

I got it when I was 24, it was barely more to insure than my 1997 Explorer.

I like that idea, although my lack of talent could become an issue haha.

I can’t say I would downgrade now that I have a FiST, but if we had have gotten the Zetec S over here in the states, I would have strongly considered one. IIRC, Pumaspeed sells several parts for it.

Well you’re only paying $63 more a month for both of your cars, and I have a clean record. Come on 25, we’re getting close.

There are definitely a lot of tuning options for them. I don’t think I’d really want to squeeze more than 140hp out of a 1 litre but a slightly louder exhaust and handling mods would be on the cards.

A proven stage 1 flash by somebody works wonders on an Ecoboost. I didn’t understand until I just rode in a flashed car. A month later my car was tuned. The extra power is nice, but the massively improved throttle response, along with removing rev hang is fantastic.

I’d be more concerned about long term reliability, it would be my only car and I do up to 20k miles a year.

It actually didn’t go down at all for me when I turned 25.
